How to choose a washing machine for washing?

At Speed Queen laundromats, you’ll find washing machines in different sizes — you don’t need to know the exact capacity to choose the right one. The simplest rule:
- Everyday items (small/medium load):
T-shirts, underwear, tops, light sweatshirts. - Larger load:
towels, bedding, a few outfits at once. - Bulky items or a “mega load”:
duvets, bedspreads, blankets, bigger batches of laundry.
The ¾-drum rule:
aim to fill the drum to about 75%. If you cram it full, the laundry won’t tumble properly, the results may be worse (and drying will take longer).
Pro tip:
if you’re combining items with very different care needs in one load (e.g., towels and delicate shirts), consider splitting the laundry into two smaller machines. It’s usually safer and delivers a better final result.
Choose a larger washer — more space means better results and often shorter drying. For bulky items and down-filled pieces (duvets, covers, jackets), a larger washer works better. With us, you can add tennis balls for washing/drying, because they help break up the down.
Detergents and add-ons
In our laundromats, automatic detergent dosing is included in the wash price. This makes washing convenient and effective.
Important:
don’t add your own detergents (powder, liquid, pods) to the washer if the laundromat uses automatic dosing — too much product can reduce wash performance and make rinsing harder.
Can I use my own add-ons?
- Spot stain remover:
yes — ideally apply it before washing (directly on the stain), wait a moment, and only then put the item in the washer. - Fabric softener / fragrances:
if you want a specific result, check the signage in the laundromat or ask the staff.
Don’t pour anything in “just in case”. - Pods and extra powder:
most often no — automatic dosing already replaces them.
